Car Charging
Why Won’t My Car Recognise the Charger or Cable?
2 min read
Sometimes, the charger doesn’t acknowledge that a car is connected. This means that it won't start the charge either imediately or on your schedule. Smart tarriff's such as Inteligent octopus will also not work correctly.
Common Causes
- Cable not fully inserted
- Cable not compatible or damaged.
- Car not in “ready to charge” state (gear not in park, ignition on, etc.).
- Fault with the car’s onboard charger hardware.
- 12V battery too low to initialise charging electronics.
Steps to Fix the Issue
- Check the Connection
- Push the plug in firmly until it clicks.
- Inspect the Port and Cable
- Look for damage or dirt.
- Try a different cable.
- Put the Car in the Correct State
- Ensure the vehicle is in “Park” and switched off.
- Restart the Car
- Lock/unlock and retry.
- Test at Another Charger
- Confirms whether it’s the car or cable causing the issue.
Summary
- No recognition = connection or 12V issue.
- Re-seat, clean, and try another charger if possible.
