Is your EV charger heading for the UK?
Have you ever thought about the number of EV chargers that will end up in landfill? It’s now estimated that over 100,000 EV chargers could go to landfill in the UK alone by 2030. The reason? Most EV chargers are sealed units. While they can receive over-the-air updates, when the tech becomes outdated (as it inevitably will), you can't upgrade the hardware. You can’t open them up without destroying them. They’re not built to come off the wall, be opened up, and fixed. At some point in their life, you’ll simply have to throw them away or take them to the dump and put them in the e-waste section.
At Simpson & Partners, we’ve taken a different path. We’ve built our chargers to be modular, weatherproof and engineered to evolve. Both hardware and software are repairable, upgradeable and updateable. So yes, you can still do over-the-air updates, but when the hardware eventually needs to be replaced, it can be. They’re built to stay useful for the long haul.
When I look back to the start of my EV charging design journey, I wanted to create something that felt timeless, both in how it looked and how it lasted. A piece of design that complemented people’s homes and lives, that didn’t look like a stuck-on black plastic box.
At the heart of that instinct was the guiding principle that David and I kept coming back to: timelessness and longevity. We circled around it again and again, trying to capture what it was we were really aiming for. And now, with 10 years of experience behind us, we can see it clearly. It simply came down to this. We didn’t want to create something that would one day end up in landfill.
During the early days when we co-founded Andersen EV, I remember visiting the Design Museum in Kensington. On display on the first floor were technical computer gadgets encased in glass boxes. Were we trying to make something that would end up in there? Most people know David loves Bang & Olufsen and Dieter Rams. We were researching these product design principles and asking ourselves: what is good design? What makes technology stand the test of time.
At Simpson & Partners, I've always kept in mind that our chargers are designed for people and people’s homes. They are more a home accessory than a car accessory.
At Simpson & Partners, we believe real sustainability means no compromises. Our chargers are designed to look good, last long and do more. Better products don’t just happen by chance. Because we design and engineer every part of the charger ourselves, we can control everything. It’s designed by us. Built by the team. From our factory in the Cotswolds.
Our chargers look great, have great tech, they have smart intelligent tariff accreditation. What is not to like?
